Prunes are famous as laxatives because of their high fiber content. They are also high in vitamins, minerals, and natural antioxidants. They are also high in beta-carotene and citric acid and replenish the body's electrolytes.
From an Ayurvedic point of view, they are balanced for Vata and Pitta, being heavy and sweet, and have beneficial qualities for Kapha because of their laxative effect. Vata should be cautious in overuse due to the high potassium in prunes, making it a diuretic that can dry; sprinkling a pinch of salt on the theme counterbalances this nature.
