Bija Mantras

Bija Mantras

In Sanskrit, a “mantra” translates to “instrument of thought” and consists of a sound, syllable, word, or group of words that bring awareness and presence while awakening and stimulating the mind towards higher consciousness.

The chakras are energy wheels located along the spine. They are connected to the subtle body (mind, intelligence, and ego) and can be affected by breath, colors, musical notes, and mantras.

Mantras associated with individual chakras are called Bija mantras. These one-syllable “seed” sounds, when chanted aloud, activate the energy of the individual chakras, bringing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual balance and clarity.

Using chakra mantras during meditation can have a potent effect. Imagine a chakra as an instrument and the mantra as a tuning fork. When you strike the tuning fork, the instrument will vibrate, clearing out any negative energy that does not share the same vibration.

Instructions: Sit in meditation posture, take a deep breath, and on the exhalation, chant the chosen mantra/s aloud, repeating 3-5 times.
