Abhyanga is foundation therapy during Panchakarma (an Ayurvedic detoxification practice). It assists in moving toxins in the lymphatic system towards purgation. It is also a beneficial daily practice that can be done in an Ayurvedic clinic or at home.
Its practice moisturizes the skin, lubricates the joints, and penetrates the deep tissues and organs. It improves circulation, stimulates the internal organs, decreases the effects of aging, and increases stamina. Additionally, it benefits sleep, enhances vision and hair growth, and gives stability, groundedness, and comfort.
When designing an Abhyanga practice, oils are chosen depending on your constitution, imbalance, or seasons. Specific oils are available for each dosha or combination of doshas, along with specialty oils for different conditions and needs. Below is an oil that is balanced for all three doshas.
Directions:
· Warm the oil bottle by placing it in a mug of hot water (Optional but recommended)
· Massage the oil onto your entire body for 5-15 minutes, beginning at your extremities and working toward the middle of your body. Use long strokes on the limbs and circular strokes on the joints.
· Massage the scalp, which rejuvenates the mind and nervous system.
· After applying oils, leave oil on the body for 20 minutes (good time for meditation and/or pranayama), then shower or bath, using minimal soap.
· This practice can be done in the morning or evening.
You can apply oils at room temperature, but it is very nice to warm them; this can be done by placing hot water in a cup and putting the bottle of oil in it to warm, but if you want to wake up to a warm bottle of oil, then look below to a simple and inexpensive setup that automatically turns the heating element on at the desired time (best to set up two hours before you require) you would like to use it. Bluetooth controls this system on your phone, and you must purchase two items. I have added the Amazon links with the picture.
